Empathy artist Enni-Kukka Tuomala has adopted the role of ‘Election Artist‘ for the 2023-25 election cycle. As the Election Artist Tuomala has document conversations, campaigns, encounters and experiences to examine the current state of Western democracy, the health of electoral systems and the role of empathy in political culture and dialogue. The collected material will become an archive of what this critical turning point for the world and the planet looks and feels like in different communities, and be used to create a series of new artworks.
Tuomala’s journey as the Election Artist began in 2023 in her native Finland in the lead up to the Finnish Parliamentary Election 2023, when she travelled 3,4o0km across all 13 Finnish electoral districts in the final week of campaigning before the vote. Since then her work has continued to document the Finnish Presidential Election 2024, the EU Parliamentary Election 2024, the UK General Election 2024, the USA Presidential Election 2024 and the Finnish County and Municipal Elections 2025.
So far as the Election Artist Tuomala has documented 6 elections, travelled more than 40,000km across 8 countries via public transport, conducted more than 420 interviews, taken more than 5,000 photographs and recorded over 100h of audio- and video footage.
